Alejo Castro’s family farm, Volcan Azul, in the Western Valley region of Costa Rica has won numerous awards for its coffees and drips in coffee history. Alejo is the fifth generation descendent of coffee pioneers Alejo C. Jimenez and Wilehlm Kahle who planted some of the first specialty coffee plantations in the early 1900s. Alejo’s focus for the Volcan Azul farm is to push coffee quality while making a positive impact on the environment.
We have their natural process San Isidro varietal named after the nearby town where they experimented with lines of T5296 (a Timor and Villa Sarchi hybrid, or Sarchimor varietal). The Timor varietal is believed to be a naturally occurring arabica and robusta hybrid (something that has not been successfully artificially) and contains a high amount of robusta genetics that confer leaf rust resistance, but these genetics don’t seem to reduce the coffee quality. Given how tasty this coffee is these types of hybridisations across coffee species and are exciting for the future development of tasty, disease resistant and sustainable coffee varietals.
This is our staff favourite coffee. It was also the one that Lemmie, our head roaster, learned to roast with. It smells incredibly fruity when it is ground. Huge purple flavours, honeysuckle and dark chocolate covered strawberries! It is beautiful and it is loud. We hope to purchase this coffee for years to come!
